We have drawers filled with receipts (many of which are really not needed for any reason). My wife makes me clean them out about once a month. I used to scan each and every business receipt but got too far behind. I’ve tried file systems, envelopes, and even just an old Target plastic bag. There must be a better way.
Enter Genius Scan. I came across the app in a Forbes article about the five must have business apps or something like that. Other scan apps have disappointed but not this one. First I started with the free version to give it a try. The scan quality was pretty good and ease of use was great. The real value comes from the paid version called Genius Scan +. For $2.99 you can export your scans directly to Box, Dropbox, Email, Evernote, Expensify, Facebook, Google Drive, and SkyDrive.
Now I just scan my receipts, export them to my favorite cloud storage site, and shred them. I’ve created separate folders by year for personal and business expenses to make tax time easier. The trick is to scan receipts immediately and get rid of them. Don’t let them pile up or you will end up reverting back to the folder or envelope.
